About Tussock
Tussock is a free, web-based planning and tracking tool for Scouts Australia Scout Groups. It helps Scout Leaders plan nights, track attendance, and award Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) and other framework achievements — all from a phone at a campsite.
What problem does Tussock solve?
Scout Leaders juggle a lot of administrative overhead: writing up event plans before each night, manually recording who attended, tracking which OAS stages each Scout has reached across multiple streams, and then navigating Terrain — Scouts Australia's official platform — to input it all after the fact.
This paperwork overhead detracts from time spent actually running great Scout Nights. Tussock brings the planning, running, and recording all into one place, optimised for use on a phone at the venue — so leaders spend less time on admin and more time with their Scouts.
- Plan events in minutes with the Scout Night wizard — SPICES domains, Challenge Areas, and OAS streams pre-mapped
- Take attendance with one tap per Scout, assign PAL roles (Participate / Assist / Lead) on the fly
- Award OAS stages and Milestones with a single "Complete & Award" action at the end of the night
- Track Special Interest Area (SIA) projects per Scout over time
- Parent consent and medical record workflows for compliance
How does Tussock relate to Terrain?
Terrain is Scouts Australia's official member management and event-recording platform at terrain.scouts.com.au. It is the system of record for all Scouting activity in Australia.
Tussock is a companion tool — not a replacement. Leaders link their Terrain account to Tussock, import their Scout roster, and use Tussock's better mobile experience to plan and run nights. Results (attendance, OAS awards, Milestones) sync back to Terrain so the official record stays current.
Who built Tussock?
Tussock was built by Scout leaders, for Scout leaders. It started as a tool to solve real problems encountered at the coalface of running Scout Nights — the awkward juggle of phone, notebook, and Terrain while trying to actually supervise a group of young people.
It is an open-source community project. The goal is to make high-quality administrative tooling available to every Scout Group in Australia at no cost, and to improve the Scouting experience for both leaders and youth members.
