About this trail

This 4-night trail is designed around the Outdoor Challenge Area, making it straightforward to program outdoor-focused nights that contribute to Milestone credit. Each night follows the Scouts Australia Plan > Do > Review cycle and is structured as a mix of indoor and outdoor nights.

Across its 4 nights, this trail maps to OAS requirements in Bushwalking. The requirements are specific — not just "do some bushcraft" but individual Stage requirements like fire-lighting methods or shelter construction techniques. Tussock pre-loads these requirements into each night's event plan so leaders can sign them off during the activity rather than transcribing them later.

The SPICES developmental domains covered by this trail are: Physical, Intellectual, Social, Character, Emotional. Programming across multiple domains in a single trail helps Groups demonstrate balanced youth development in their term plans and annual reports.

You can run the four nights in order for a coherent multi-week program, or pick individual nights to fill gaps in your existing term plan. In Tussock, importing a night from this trail pre-fills the Scout Night wizard: Challenge Area, SPICES domains, OAS requirements, and suggested segments are all set. Customise from there to suit your Section.

Import into Tussock

Import this trail into Tussock to run each night with attendance tracking and automatic OAS requirement awarding built in — no manual requirement lookup needed.

OAS Requirements Covered

The following Outdoor Adventure Skills requirements are mapped across this trail's four nights. Import this trail into Tussock to award these requirements automatically when Scouts attend each night.

The Four Nights

Each night below is a standalone Scout Night session of approximately 1 hr 30 min and follows the Plan > Do > Review cycle. Run them in order for the full Trail Explorers trail, or adapt individual nights for your program.

Night 1: Gear Up & Plan

Cubs learn what to wear and carry on a bushwalk, discuss sun protection and emergency contacts, and begin compass basics.

Indoor Challenge Area: Outdoor Duration: 1 hr 30 min
Physical Intellectual

OAS requirements this night: bushwalking.s2.plan-1, bushwalking.s2.plan-3, bushwalking.s2.plan-4, bushwalking.s2.plan-5, bushwalking.s2.do-1, bushwalking.s2.do-3

  1. Opening Ceremony Ceremony

Grand Howl and flag break. Akela introduces the Trail Explorers theme: "Over four weeks we will learn to gear up, navigate, and hit the trail."

    Character
    Equipment (1 item)
    • flag
  2. Fabric Test Challenge practice

Set up stations with different fabric samples (cotton, nylon, polyester, wool). Cubs pour a small amount of water on each, time how long it takes to dry, and rate comfort. Record findings on a patrol chart. Discuss why quick-dry synthetics beat cotton on the trail.

    Intellectual Social
    Equipment (5 items)
    • fabric samples (cotton, nylon, polyester, wool)
    • water spray bottles
    • timer
    • recording sheets
    • pens
  3. Essential Gear Relay Game

Scatter items around the hall — some essential for a bushwalk (hat, water bottle, first-aid kit, map, sunscreen, whistle, rain jacket) and some distractors (pillow, board game, hair dryer). Patrols race to collect the correct items into a backpack and arrange them for easy access. Each patrol then draws or lists their final kit on butcher paper.

    Physical Intellectual
    Equipment (5 items)
    • assorted bushwalk gear items
    • distractor items
    • backpacks (one per patrol)
    • butcher paper
    • markers
  4. Sun Safety Stations practice

Three rotating stations (5 min each): (1) Apply sunscreen to a partner and discuss SPF ratings, (2) Build the best shade shelter from a tarp and sticks, (3) Match UV-index cards to recommended protection levels. Debrief: slip-slop-slap-seek-slide.

    Physical Intellectual
    Equipment (5 items)
    • sunscreen samples
    • tarp
    • sticks or broom handles
    • UV-index cards (printed)
    • timer
  5. Emergency Action Discussion discussion

Akela presents three scenario cards: (1) a Cub twists an ankle on a rocky track, (2) the group gets caught in a sudden storm, (3) a Cub is bitten by an ant and has a reaction. For each scenario, patrols discuss what to do and who to call. Introduce Triple Zero (000) — when to call, what information to give (name, location, what happened). Each Cub practises saying the information aloud.

    Intellectual Character
    Equipment (3 items)
    • scenario cards (printed)
    • whiteboard
    • markers
  6. Compass Intro — Find the Treat practice

Quick compass lesson: hold flat, rotate bezel, read the bearing. Hide four numbered envelopes at N, S, E, W walls of the hall. Each patrol follows a simple bearing card to find envelopes and collect letters that spell a bushwalking word (e.g. T-R-A-I-L). First patrol to unscramble the word wins.

    Intellectual Physical
    Equipment (4 items)
    • compasses (one per pair)
    • bearing cards
    • numbered envelopes
    • letter tiles
  7. Closing Reflection Ceremony

    Emotional Character

Total night duration: 1 hr 30 min

Night 2: Navigate & Respect

Cubs practise compass bearings, explore vegetation impact, and learn boundaries before the upcoming outdoor walks.

Indoor Challenge Area: Outdoor Duration: 1 hr 30 min
Intellectual Social Character

OAS requirements this night: bushwalking.s2.plan-2, bushwalking.s2.do-2, bushwalking.s2.do-5

    Character
    Equipment (1 item)
    • flag
  2. Compass Bearings Bootcamp practice

Pairs practise taking and following bearings. Set up five cones around the hall, each labelled with a letter. Give each pair a "bearing sheet" — a list of five bearings to follow from the centre. At each cone they collect a code word. When all five are collected they report back. Rotate roles so both Cubs get turns holding the compass.

    • compasses (one per pair)
    • five cones with letters
    • bearing sheets
    • pencils
  3. Leave No Trace Skit creative

Each patrol receives one "bad bushwalker behaviour" card (e.g. picking wildflowers, shortcutting a switchback, dropping litter, carving into a tree). They have 5 minutes to prepare a short skit showing the wrong behaviour and then the right behaviour. Perform for the Pack. Discuss how boots, sticks, and off-track walking damage fragile plants and soil.

    Equipment (2 items)
    • behaviour cards (printed)
    • simple costume props (hats, scarves)
  4. Boundary Mapping Game Game

Akela lays out a large printed trail map (or draws one on butcher paper). Cubs use stickers to mark the trail boundary, water sources, and off-limit areas. Then play "Red-Light Green-Light Bushwalk": Akela calls scenarios ("you reach a fork without a marker", "you spot a shortcut through scrub") and Cubs must freeze (stop) or step (follow the marked trail). Discuss: always tell a leader where you are going and stay within the marked route.
